For my birthday, I wanted to buy a dog. I even had a little puppy all picked out and was right on the verge of convincing Tiger that another kid in the family was a good idea... even though it would cost him $600 and would poop in the yard several times a day... when I realized that even if he said yes, he would resent my beloved birthday present every day for the next 12-15 years. So today, when I finally admitted to myself that my new puppy, Hero (that's what I was going to name her) would have to wait a few years, I decided that I was still entitled to the $600 present and started shopping. It's OK because we just got our economic stimulus check yesterday which is like found money, right? So, I completed round one of my birthday shopping spree today after placing and order with my Park Lane Jewelry Representative, Sherry. I had told her that I was going to order something a month ago and she had probably already given up on me when I called her this morning. After memorizing the catalog and finding about $1000 worth of stuff that I need right now, I finally settled on 4 necklaces and a pair of earrings. I consulted with a friend of mine, with drastically different taste and remarked on how those beautiful petite pieces that she loves would feel absolutely ridiculous on me and my taste was more similar to an Amazon Princess... I'm a Jungle Print, without actual Jungle Prints. I'm really happy with the pieces that I settled on and can't wait for them to arrive. For Round 2 of my shopping spree, I'll get my hair done on Friday and I'll finish off the 3rd round with some new clothes. I've been disciplining myself for a year and I think all that bottled up shopping energy is about to explode.
My Jewelry fetish started with some pieces that I bought a while ago and never got around to wearing. Last night, at the Pinewood Derby, of all places, I wore the necklace and earring set that Jacob found in a pile of junk on my dresser and got one compliment after another. I know that I've lost some weight... 40 lbs, actually, and people were noticing, but I think it was the jewelry more than anything else. I was surprised that people I've known all year were suddenly interested in how I look... and liked it! I was approached by nearly a dozen different people in one night. I thought I'd like to stay at that Pinewood Derby forever! I'm feeling really good about myself right now.
By the way, it was Andrew and Tiger's first Derby and they had fun. Tiger spent most of the night closely inspecting the winning cars so that he'll know how to make his car faster for next year (I realize I said "his car" and not "Andrew's car" anyone who's had a son and a husband participate in a Derby understands). Annah won the grass hair contest at the meeting. Last month, at pack meeting, the kids made little grass head Chia Pets out of a stocking, dirt, and grass seeds and were supposed to take them to the Derby last night to be judged. Annah won the "Most in Need of a Hair Cut" award, her little guy did have some long wild hair! She was feeling pretty proud of herself for being the only winning member of the family last night... although I definitely felt like a winner by the time we got home.
